Sailing - Subic Bay, Philippines

Subic Bay is a sailing enthusiasts dream, easy cruising in tranquil waters with only the slightest summer breeze to contend with.

The sailing season in this region of the world kicks off each February with the 210 nautical mile Subic to Boracay Regatta. This is normally followed a couple of months later with the 565 nautical mile Rolex China Sea Race; from Hong Kong to Subic Bay. This race as you would expect attracts international racing yachts, some from as far afield as Australia.

I have had the good fortune of taking part in slightly less demanding races during my period here in Subic. Along with an ex Kiwi Submariner and an ex Belgian Foreign Legionnaire we join Jeremy ex Royal Navy to help make up a truly multinational team, to crew his 42’ fast cruising sloop SHIBUMI.

These regattas are organised by the Saturday Afternoon Gentleman Sailors (SAGs) and take place in and around Subic Bay. Where possible however, weather permitting,  routes to some of the nearby islands outside the bay are also included. Courses are normally set on the day to suit changing conditions.

Meetings are always good spirited, but the lure of an ice cold beer or a large glass of rum & mango at the end of the day, ensures those with the biggest thirst are that wee bit more competitive………..
